Nonsense - plenty of examples excellent products that defy the supermarkets.

Speaking of which, I'm off to Morrisons now, they got Scottish salmon at half price. It's crap. but good enough for fish pie. In the week I will buy some proper Salmon from a non-supermarket vendor that has not, despite delusional thinking by some, been seen off by supermarkets!!!

So where do you buy your rod-caught wild salmon, which is the only type that I can think you mean by 'proper salmon'? And at what price? Salmon stocks have been very low recently, & wild salmon available to buy in shops almost as rare as hen's teeth.

You can't buy rod caught salmon, full stop. The sale of rod-caught wild salmon has been banned in England since 2009, and in Scotland since 2007. I've always considered net caught wild salmon as "proper", and you can certainly buy that-at a price!

I have cousin in Norway who keeps me supplied.

Sadly the Scots have gone down-hill a bit since they haven't been running the Empire for us and many of the amazing things that that came out of Scotland seem to have disappeared.

Ah, so we all now know what some of us might long have suspected - that it's a brand, just like anything else. But are you embarrassed by this, proud of it or what? What is your personal view of the value of "the firm" as a whole and the respective values of its consitutent parts as outlined in this article? There's no figure given in it for the gross income that the firm is supposed to earn for "the country" or indeed where those earnings go, which might have been rather more to the point. Ah, well - one may suppose that one will not starve, will one?...

I cannot help but conclude that,as a piece in The Daily Telegraph, it plays into the hands of Republicans more effectively than most in that paper.

Well of course the Monarchy is a brand. I should have thought that was self-evident.

The consultancy even puts a value on the system that allows about 800 companies, including the likes of Fortnum & Mason, John Lewis and Weetabix, to use Royal Warrants. The report estimates that Royal warrants are worth £4  billion to the companies that get the “The Firm’s” seal of approval.

“[The Monarchy] is one of the most valuable of all British brands. Whatever one thinks about the constitutional principle, there seems little doubt that the institution of monarchy adds significant annual earnings and long-term economic value to the UK.”

I have no idea why you think that sort of thing "plays into the hands of republicans". Are you sure you were reading the same article??

The whole "good for business" angle really is scraping the barrel, didn't last years wedding thing have a net loss economically ?

It's a good inspirational model for young people wanting to set up in business though , isn't it !
All you need to do is to create a myth of your value and get the poor to pay for your luxury lifestyle .......... excellent way of helping us "out of the recession"

Some things are good for business ....... selling drugs, selling arms to dodgy regimes etc but it doesn't make them morally acceptable
