ff this sounds like the height of bad manners on their part. It would be much better form - if, of course, like Mr Pee and me they are Sky+ subscribers - if they were to record it. The clue for you is if the little red light in the middle of their Sky+ box is glowing - that means they're recording something.

Would it be bad manners to keep mentioning that you are a SKY+subscriber and constantly go on about how it makes you morally superior ?

and (I think we might have been here before ?) are/were "detector vans" simply vans containing someone with a list of everyone who doesn't have a TV licence ? rather than invest in fancy technology to "detect" etc ............

My MiL is a subscriber to Virgin & she has the same thing on her box. So there, clever-clogs.

Years ago, in the days of VHS, we visited friends having set our machine to record, only to discover they were recording the same thing. And no, we didn't watch it!

Your MiL is a Virgin? OK, so am I - until middle of June when I tell 'em to take the hymen elswhere ...

All you need to say to a Maffia enquirer is, yes, you can inspect my TV/Virgin/Sky/Murdoch/Arial/TV set up - but get a court order first. Otherwise F off.

I was looking forward to that scenario, but unfortunately about three years back, when they were due to call, I was out and my partner in crime was busy teaching when the bastards called and she let them in. She said it was the easiest and quickest option with a pupil on the boil upstairs. Next time I will have a double barralled shotgun waiting for them.

I was told this by the agent who came to search my house. He said detector vans were more expensive to run than having people calling on the suspect addresses. For instance, just because there's no sign that a television is in use doesn't mean that there isn't a television there not being watched at that moment. But human beings don't bother about that: they just knock on the door anyway.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Don't be flippant about this! Run on the Greek banks, general election, leaving the euro, possibly Italy following suit then Spain...
yes, we're "better off out of it", but there's nowhere to hide really - things will get pretty rough if all that happens.

And that's why Newsnight is essential viewing just now.

Interestingly that is exactly why I don't watch Newsnight !!Just too tough to take, hoping we don't all get trampled in the rush to save the banks at anybody else's expense.I can't affect what is going on, so just have to keep on flogging books and hope my job survives !!
Also I don't trust what I am being told by the telly..too many agendas.

But you are right that it looks bad, and the Greek people deserve an honest portrayal of their situation.

Ok, I'm gonna try Newsnight tonight. If it's a waste of time, expect a letter from my solicitor!

What time does it start (doesn't clash with Dimbleby does it?)

spend the time giving XTC a spin . No need for legal action there !!

XTC not arrived in post yet

We live in highly litigious times, I don't think my response would be over-intense.

Don't waste time watching news, listen to music instead (don't forget it's the best means we have of digesting time).
Currently watching a cracking play off game between Torquay and Cheltenham, when it's finished mrs ER can have the remote back and I'll put my headphones back on.

i find Newsnight just too predictable and prejudiced to be any thing other than truly appalling, a mockery of a serious news programme .... some correspondents do decent analysis but the presentation is dreadful and the actual news content is rather meagre at times .. the 24hr news services both BBC and Sky are far superior at both coverage and depth analysis; Newsnight is a tired old donkey
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

But was it ever intended to be a 'news bulletin' type programme? It's an analysis programme - or at least was last time I saw it, which was quite a long time ago. Is Paxo still running it? Probably about time he was pensioned off - he's probably become rather a caricature of himself.
