I'm more a prog rock person really (I know) and I've got virtually everything by Yes,Genesis,Camel,Gentle Giant and others.
I like plenty of other rock/pop stuff (I even like Supertramp).
    I've already got my coat.
Edge, Too much watching County's obviously had its effect! We're the 70s rather than the 60s your musically formative years? My prog roots were King Crimson, Nice>ELP, Floyd, Moodies, Caravan, but then so much evolved from bands that started off playing 'white' blues ( The Mayall family tree), Traffic, Jethro Tull, Keef Hartley Band, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, then there was the great Folk-rock of Fairports, Eclection, Third Ear Band. The late 60s also saw a number of Beatles songs given the heavy rock treatment. I put a compilation Heavy Beatles which was:
    BEATLES Golden Slumbers
    BEATLES Carry that weight
COCKER,Joe With a little help from my friends
    COCKER,Joe I'll cry instead
COCKER,Joe You've got to hide your love away
COCKER,Joe She came in thru the bathroom window
    YES Every little thing
    DEEP PURPLE Help
DEEP PURPLE We can work it out
SPOOKY TOOTH I am the walrus
    VANILLA FUDGE Ticket to ride
    HAVENS,Richie Eleanor Rigby
    HAVENS,Richie Strawberry Fields Forever
    HAVENS,Richie Lady Madonna
    HAVENS,Richie She's leaving home
    REDDING,Otis Day tripper
    PICKETT,Wilson Hey Jude
    COLLINS,Judy In my life
    COLLINS,Phil Tomorrow never knows
    BEATLES The end

As for your Sibelius cure - try Beecham's 1930s recording of Leminkainen's Return!

      Excellent observation cloughie!

      Don't forget

Hendrix with Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Day Tripper & While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

Although I was mainly rock (Led Zep, Deep Purple, Free, Hendrix, Cream, Sabbath & Wishbone Ash), I liked prog/experimental and cut my teeth with King Crimson, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Yes, Genesis, Can & ELP.
My school was in the same road as Small Wonder Records and the owner, Pete Stennett, not only took us through all the punk stuff we needed, he also put us onto bands like Magma.

And of course the classical and opera was always there, but I didn't have too many friends that shared my taste for this type of music!!

Since Anthology 2 came out I've had a bit of a soft spot for George Martin's arrangement that forms the backing for Eleanor Rigby on 'Revolver'.
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

....and since we're under the covers, what about a spot of Brother Ray for a Sunday morning!
From THE DICK CAVETT SHOW. September 18, 1972. The Raelettes are: Vernita Moss, Susaye Green, Mable John, Dorothy Berry, & Estella Yarbrough.

There is also Eleanor's dream on the Macca's 'Give my regards to Broad Street'.
Also on Beatles orchestrations on a recent BBC4 programme on Easy Listening there were snatches of the Hollyridge Strings doing Beatles tunes which would make interesting listening almost 50 years on. Straight covers do little for me but I like interesting arrangements eg Serio Mendes 'Fool on the Hill', Carpenters 'Ticket to Ride', Mamas and Papas 'I call your name' and in recent years the Mavericks 'World without Love' .

Only just looked at this thread, no idea about the Banshees but I did like her reincarnation into The Creatures and the album Anima Animus, etc. Also really keen on Dr. Robert & The Blow Monkeys, Depeche Mode and I do have one Echo & The Bunnymen plus I'm a Jarvis Cocker (solo and Pulp) that does not make me a bad person but probably above too recent for this thread? Edit: to stay ontopic I have just two Beatles, Sgt. Pepper and Revolver

Depeche Mode's story is one of my favourite in pop music history. Everybody though they were finished (perhaps even they did !) when Vince Clarke left, but they beat the odds to have a fine career lasting decades, and made some decent records to boot !!
As for Siouxsie and the Banshees, a greatest hits is worth a few quid of anybody's money IMO .

edit: The Creatures was certainly an interesting phase/experiment.......not 100% successful perhaps, but then experiments often aren't. And she was always prepared to try things, which kept(and perhaps keeps) her music worth trying.
Super edit: I swear I once saw Siouxsie on a tube reading the Radio Times, (back around 1980). I think It must have been a lookylikey !!Siouxsie Sioux reading the Radio times pretty much rocked my world view..although maybe for the better !!

                          Are we not allowed to

a: Have strong opinions even if they seem counter to popular opinion or "taste" ?
                          and / or
b: Not take oneself too seriously ?

I'm sure Elgar and Macca can cope with my dislike
