In today's Court Circular we read that, among other things,.....

The Queen drove to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.......

(having previously arrived at Edinburgh airport).

Is this just Court Circular speak, or was she really behind the wheel, do you think?

Perhaps she had a herd of Ayrshires to move? Where is Palace of Hoyroodhouse located, by the way?

Looks like you've got typo problems too, Bryn.
            I assume you mean 'herd'.

The Court Circular got it right (now corrected in my post!).

              Or should that be:
              '....., too, Bryn.'?

I quite liked the 'rule' (i.e. not actually a hard and fast rule): 'How seriously does it expect a response/reply?' If it does, a question mark seems rational. However, observation suggests that it seldom does, even in such cases where a reply seems called for.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

That seems to me like a good 'rule', f f, for writing.
I'm thinking here of the number of times people find it necessary to explain that 'It's a rhetorical question' in speech. I'm sure Victor Borge might have come up with a vocal punctuation solution!

That would be a question mark, and as we know......

Well, I for one would never seek to question Mark unless I really felt that I had good reason so to do...
