And I am hearing the word "glacier" increasingly pronounced as though there were a Y following the A. This would bring it in line with the verbed version, "glaciated", but at odds with how I always assumed it to be pronounced, with a short A as in "taxi". Is this optional either way - or yet another Americanisation?

I think that it’s because some twit has decided it should be pronounced differently and like all the other solecisms which are actively promoted on TV, it catches on. Another one is Uranus with the accent on the ‘Upside and I agree with you regarding glacier.
Another case in point is ‘can I get’ instead of ‘can I have’ which the soaps really bang out.Money can't buy you happiness............but it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery - Spike Milligan

Couldn't find a suitable thread for this.
On 'Only Connect' last night, Victoria C. M. distinctly said 93% of the population are vegan! I played it back a couple of times to make sure. It was on the answers to the cake question on the first Wall. It's either true or an awful lot of people didn't notice.
