" It cannot be underestimated what he [Muir Mathieson] did to ameliorate the stigma of commercialism and involve the great and the good of music in the creative process of making movies." (My itals)

Sloppy thinking on top of sloppy vocabulary: isn't he writing the piece because he thinks too many people do underestimate what MM did?

Not just broadcasters, it is tiresomely common among journalists. I think it's one of those cases where an initial error got repeated so many times so quickly that it assumed normality.
