I suppose one beneficial consequence of all this will be the absence of apostrophes where they aren't warranted - namely when popping one in before the S to make a noun plural.

Pedant, pedagogue and poet...of imagination all compact

But keep chalk firmly in pocket for now, there is out-of-school work afoot this week

Back in the 70s when I worked in the former residence of the only British PM to be assassinated, our employer's Personnel Department - that's what they were called in those days - advised staff by means of a handwritten notice pinned up on the wall of Reception that we could leave 30 minutes earlier due to the impact on train services of the miner's strike. I wondered at the time, and indeed still wonder, how the NUM discovered which particular member of the union to call out in order to maximize inconvenience to the commuting public.

In this instance, a bit of pedantry is relevant:-

The "Apostrophe Protection Society" (APS) is no longer with us.
"The Apostrophe Protection Society" (TAPS) is very much alive and kicking on Facebook.

                              Vaguely connected:
One snowy Sheffield evening, all our libraries received a faxed hand-written notice saying that due to the inclement weather, as many people as possible could leave early, leaving just a skeletal staff.

Btw, does anyone speak of 'clement' weather?

Non-stop around here - but not to him, after those poison pen letters he sent us.
