Welcome to your new National Trust car sticker.
I'm quite happy with 'Welcome to Beningbrough Hall', or, in teamsaint's neck of the woods, 'Welcome to Mottisfont', but Welcome to a car sticker?Last edited by Pulcinella; 30-01-21, 15:06. Reason: Comma added: I don't want some pedant to criticize my punctuation!

Guardian today: "Other Republicans stood up to Trump as he was pedaling unfounded claims about voter fraud after Joe Biden won the presidential election but before he took office."
Yep, on yer bike T****.It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

At work I used to delight in holding up proceedings whenever anyone used one (“Remind me...?”)

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

How very diligently researched and exhaustively copied....thankyou for your patient clarification.
I was of course referencing these in a Gramophone context, where such acronyms became a familiar way of keeping up as the re- and re-re-reissues gathered pace through the 21st Century; readers became familiar with acronyms through such unmissable monthly features as Rob Cowan's Replay section, specialising in historical and classic-stereo-era tapings....
I was about to say, Petrushka would know, but - here he is!
I do love a good acronym. Where would we all be without LGBT(Q)(I)........LOL.....OMG.....
A favourite of mine is DIET (Do I Eat Today.....)...FF in a GP context (Frequent Flyer (i.e. recurrent visitor)... probably rather less of a problem right now...)
HIPP seems essential round here ...........Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 10-02-21, 22:24.

OK, transfer me to Pedant's Paradise if you like, but just give me time to get me coat...
The difference between an abbreviation and an acronym is well shown by the the World Health Organisation, 'Doubleyou Aitch Owe' yes, 'Who' never.I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Just like WHO....no pronunciation as such, just one capital letter after another.....
There are many kinds of abbreviation which are not acronyms of course, like Dr or Prof etc....so the terminological application here is very flexible...
Initialism is another option if you so choose....
One could say that acronyms tend to contain vowels whilst initialisms might or might not, but that is the kind of linguistic distinction that soon dissolves away, evolving through continuous usage....and "abbreviation" becomes more of an umbrella term, really.Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 10-02-21, 17:13.
