Yes! But only if you grab its ankle and don't let go.

On today's BBC midday local TV news: "Many areas experienced very rough conditions yesterday - caused by a depression which was separate to Storm Brandon, which passed through on Monday".

          That's a new one, I think?

And I am hearing the word "glacier" increasingly pronounced as though there were a Y following the A. This would bring it in line with the verbed version, "glaciated", but at odds with how I always assumed it to be pronounced, with a short A as in "taxi". Is this optional either way - or yet another Americanisation?

              Predictive text

I think that it’s because some twit has decided it should be pronounced differently and like all the other solecisms which are actively promoted on TV, it catches on. Another one is Uranus with the accent on the ‘Upside and I agree with you regarding glacier.

Another case in point is ‘can I get’ instead of ‘can I have’ which the soaps really bang out.

I've always pronounced it as rhyming with "glazier", S_A, rather than "glassy-er" - except when referring to the Fox's Mints - something which I din't think I've done since the '70s

... the 1933 OED offers both glas-yer and gleish-er without saying which might be preferable.

I can't put my hand on my copy of Noblesse Oblige - but I suspect Nancy Mitford would opt for the rhyme with ace.

I believe one bold barrista answered this with 'No sir, I get the coffee - you order it'.

Couldn't find a suitable thread for this.

On 'Only Connect' last night, Victoria C. M. distinctly said 93% of the population are vegan! I played it back a couple of times to make sure. It was on the answers to the cake question on the first Wall. It's either true or an awful lot of people didn't notice.

So who’s eating all the meat, eggs and dairy stuff?

It's neither. People took it for the joke it was. Just as the people who supposedly complained about the lack of nudity in the show, which we were assured would be remedied next week.

Victoria Coren-Mitchell is a past master (past mistress?) at switching effortlessly from reports of the factual to flights of fantasy and back again. (The nudity doesn't bother us because our smart TV automatically adds clothes - as long as we remember to leave the parental lock on).

They should have stayed on another hour for "Mary's Beards"!
