This is an excellent Thread: many thanks, sals. Unlike most "lists", nobody has piped up with an "Am I the only one who thinks that [insert name of any sublime masterpiece] is rubbish?"-type comment.

There: having tempted fate I would merely add Birtwistle's Clarinet Quintet, and Carter's two Piano Quintets (the first from 1991 with W/w4tet, the second from 1997 with S4tet). I'm also very fond of Christopher Fox's Clarinet Quintet - and Miles Davis, who seems to have escaped from Anton's (to whom I add my thanks to the others') list with a single bound!

    Best Wishes.

Sorry for the missing Miles - I suppose I should have just put Quintets as there seemed some debate as to the number!! I can if the salymap thread keeps going correct this and add the subsequent recommendations - which if I can be so bold might include Malcolm Arnold Quintet for Brass Op. 73 which I have just been enjoying on my (criminal) copy of Heffer 1.

Recently been enjoying Piano quintets by Bloch and Amy Beach, thanks to a recommendation from Suffy and Roehre.

Anyway, this lot seem to ONLY play Piano quintets, (ie they aren't a SQ with pianist added) which is rather unusual I think.

Well I thought it was interesting anyway.

(The Bloch is a fantastic piece, and the word "kvintetti" would win prizes on its own).

Surprised no one has mentioned Brahms's first string quintet Op. 88. I like it just as well as his second one. Sometimes better.

Mozart's K515 and 516 are head and shoulders above everything else though. Possibly equalled by Schubert's D956.

A quite recent discovery for me is Weinberg's monumental, beautiful, tormented and tragic (probably describes most of his music) Piano Quintet.

                              sounds a great suggestion ER.
I'm struggling to find the time for the SQ #16 which you recommended so enthusiastically. The little I have heard sounds terrific though.

At the moment my favourite quintet is Alfred Schnittke's Piano Quintet.
