I must admit to not listening to the Schmidt as often as to the Korngold, but your mention has prompted me to give the Schmidt a spin.

    What recordings do you have of the clarinet quintets? I see they are available on Marco Polo (separate discs), but I cannot tell from the online information is the piano part is the original left-hand version or not.
    Jimbo,

    I'm not at home at the moment. I'll have a look when I return. I do have the two on Marco Polo (Clarinet Quintets), and several others, some of which may no longer be available. I think some are on Preiser.

    As I recall, it is not always easy to determine whether the Wührer version is used or not - some notes are rather coy.

      There's always the mammoth one by Alistair Hinton. I may have it somewhere.

      My favourites are probably by Brahms (piano, and string quintets, plus the clarinet quintet), a few by Mozart and the Schubert C major String quintet.

        Agreed - and I should have mentioned them (but we're all going to omit something important here, I suspect!). Many years ago, I had the unfortunate and scary experience of being persuaded against my better judgement to participate in a performance of the largest of these three and, not being any kind of pianist worthy of the name, I was petrified (and not in any sense like Petri!) at the prospect; it was in those days in the early 70s when there were lots of power cuts and I was saved not so much by the proverbial bell as by one of these that prevented the performance from getting very far. The relief that it wasn't a lunchtime concert may easily be imagined...

          Another favourite quintet:

          Ligeti's "With Pipes, Drums, Fiddles" (Síppal, dobbal, nádihegedüvel) - for mezzo soprano and 4 percussionists.

              I thought you had capitalised it because one or two posters seem unsure exactly how many players comprise a QUINTET....

                  Most intriguing. I've found a Naxos recording (with Ibert & Bax). Are there any others? I'm tempted....

                    I listened to a movement from the Sibelius piano quintet on spotify yesterday, sounding rather like Brahms to me.
                    very taken with Korngold and Arensky piano quintets too.

                      Caliban,

                      Oooh, now you are asking. My copy is on cassette. A "research-driven" off-air recording made many, many moons ago when Malipiero was CotW. Alas, I have no record of the performers. Thoroughly recommended in any case. And thanks for the alert about a Naxos CD recording. I may have to get into the 21st Century with this work.

                        I do have a copy of this though. Rather nice, though, imo, not a disc to play from start to finish. More of a dipper.

                            Belatedly found this response, Taps, thank you. You've no doubt found the Naxos recording: http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item....m_code=9.80496

                                I'll start with MOZART K 452, the Quintet for Keyboard and Winds. {oboe,clarinet,bassoon,horn}
                                You started with the best, can only add the Rimsky-Korsakov: P&W, Schubert D956 and Brahms, Schumann and Dvorak PQuintets!
