Can't believe no one's mentioned the Fauré Piano Quintets

Another vote for the Brahms Piano Quintet as someone has observed - wonderful.

i am also particularly fond of the Beethoven op16 for piano and wind quintet. Just lovely.

Wow... never heard that. I like Piano & Winds (W.A.M). Got a recommended recording, Don?

(Actually, I love the quintet form generally - rare for me to find one I don't like. Esp with piano and/or clarinet involved)

Yes, in fact there are so many good ones it's impossible to choose. Most of the great classical/romantic/modern composers seemed to particularly relish the form (with the possible exception of Beethoven, though his string quintet op 29 is underrated).

Perhaps we should choose a quintet we can't stand, which might be a bit more difficult!

There's also Mozart's quintet for glass harmonica, oboe, flute, viola and cello (adagio & rondo only).

The other Dvorak quintets have already been bagged, very deservedly, but I wouldn't want to lose the Op 77 string 5tet with double bass.

And I've been well impressed - more than I expected to be - with the Bax Piano 5tet. Threre's a good recording on Naxos c/w the Bridge, mentioned above.
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

There's a 192kbps downloadable mp3 of the Feldman available at http://mp3.rapidlibrary.com/mp3.php?...ello+and+piano , courtesy of the Feldman Archive from SUNY-Buffalo. Sounds suspiciously like a BBC Radio 3 broadcast to me.

Well, my favourite was always the (members of) Vienna Octet version on an Ace of Diamonds LP, which I thought wasn't ever on CD. But your response has spurred me to investigate, and it is now on an Eloquence double CD called Romantic Chamber Music (slight Ugh!) - 4802397, which I have just ordered. Thank you!

A very attractive work, with a terrifically incisive first movement. On the cited recording you have the bonus of hearing what sounds like the horn player getting rid of a little excess liquid from his instrument during the slow movement.

                              Do give it a try.

                                You are very welcome.

And I see it includes the Berwald Septet which I heard the other morning while travelling, on R3 - and liked. A purchase, I think. Thank you.
