Dunking is not solely the preserve of tea and biscuits. In France, one soon becomes inclined to imitate the natives and tremper a croissant in a bowl of café or chocolat chaud.

A complete perversion of the glorious act of dunking as she is known in these isles

Or indeed, the buttered tartine... which I've never really taken to as the butter melts off into slicks on the surface of the beverage. Indeed, I also tend to take a purist S_A-type approach to croissants too, as I like the bite on the outside of a proper croissant...

As for biscuits, I very rarely have them - but the variety of a dunked one compared with a crunchy one is surely not too offensive to your sensibilities, S_A? A coffee-soaked custard cream is a delicious thing! And as Anna said when raising the issue, she only does it in private (or at least in the intimate company of the elusive 'gingernuts' ), and I agree - I don't think it should happen in front of fellow-eaters save initiates of one's inner dunking circle...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

These "gingernuts"..... Presumably they're characters with red hair, and there must be at least two of them.

Perhaps we should adopt a neologism; just as a "companion" was originally someone with whom one could share bread, how about "comdunkian" to mean that special friend with whom alone one feels comfortable sharing the dunking experience?

                  Or, reportedly, Adolf Hitler.

(The song from which this reputation originates always occurs to me when I read Sidney's Thread title "Dutillieux; why only two?")

fresh baguette in a robust red wine ....?
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Wouldn't the glass have to be made of stretchy material?

not if you dunk with delicacy!

To avoid further speculation and innuendo, the gingernuts that I dunk are not a pair of kilted Scotsmen I have locked in the cupboard under the stairs (but, oh, I wish!) but merely biscuits from a pack of Waitrose Essential Gingernuts. It's only permissible to dunk hard, crisp, biscuits. For example, the idea of dunking a Hobnob or Digestive is absolutely repellent and as for dunking anything with a chocolate covering .... that does not bear thinking about either!

I don't eat biscuits regularly but one of my favourites are the Lotus caramalised biscuits from Holland.
