i shall listen but i confess to deep reservations about Hobsbawm .... he stayed in the CP post the Hungarian repression by the Soviets led locally by Andropov
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

I found this programme very disappointing, having had high hopes for it. It seemed to be as much about Sharma as Hobsbawm, and I agree with calum that the issue of Hobsbawm's unapologeticaly sticking by the CP after Hungary, let alone the common misconception of equating Stalinism with socialism, demanded to be taken up. No sooner than H as critic Frank Newton started elaborating on how jazz outgrew the entertainment sphere, halfway through saying the word "bebop" S cut him off! The one interesting limitation H pointed out, as almost an afterthought crammed into the last 5 minutes, was that although Marxism has proven good at analysing whys and wherefores, it has never envisioned socialist governmental types as practicable alternatives to bourgeois democracy.
