Hard to tell on this showing.
Well exactly. The whole 'competitions' thing worries me a bit, but it seems to have become one of the main pathways to a career, and the specialist music schools go along with it. I have seen one of the competitors (who didn't 'win') in another setting and I can affirm that he is a superb musician as well as technician. Even the judges, who see the complete performances, only get a snapshot. But they are pretty experienced people and I'm sure they made a good choice. The silly edited soundbites we were allowed to hear from them must have annoyed them intensely...if they bothered to watch the programme.

      I didn't watch this
but its obvious what it's going to be like
as it's TV , and what is on TV is what makes "good" TV
there will be a "story" etc etc and hopefully a bit of conflict that get resolved along with some kind of "race against time" element

An interesting article on the independence of CB-H.

I know L-L is one of the figures The Forum loves to hate. In this case his 'charisma' had a clearly inspirational effect on one of the young pianists...and what's wrong with that? I come across lots of people...amateurs of music...who are likewise inspired by him, so I hereby register myself as a non-Lang-Lang-basher.

                Actually i'm with you
Having met him a couple of times and taken a group of young musicians to one of his rehearsals at the Verbier festival a few years ago he was really open and enthusiastic (unlike some other famous musicians who i'm not going to mention!). The whole "piano genius prodigy" thing really isn't my cup of tea at all but not everyone wants to listen to endless Ligeti and Messiaen as I do

Somethin' Else innit [ref:a million moans about Jexxie Nelson flogging muzak and doin in the Jon3 etc etc from Somethin' Else Ltd ]

it is the times we live in that boundaries are opaquely porous where commercial and self interest are concerned ...[the BBC is now turning into a monotropic beast where CAREER is the only organising focus]

i watched the programme .... i can see why the winner won but i preferred the fifth, fourth and second performers playing to the third [the winner] or the first and could happily listen to the fifth performer playing Bach all night ... we will surely hear more etc [of them all] ...yep no girls this year but a girl won last year ...

as a tv report of the competition it was ok but the Match of the Day team would have done a better job [wot no replays] , as a televising of the competition [as in days of yore] it was shite ...

                        It's just a temporary one.

Clearly, she's in the right job now as a writer/tweeter and broadcaster of promotional material for Radio 3.

So next time you hear a presenter gush about how "wonderful" or "marvellous" or "iconic" so-and-so's performance has been, stop to ask yourself whether they might not just be writing their PR too.

And of course - I've just remembered! Young Clemency's dad started the whole Young Musician thing off on BBC television. I wonder what he thinks of it now that his youngest has taken over his role

                                Remember?
