I thought the Mahler 4 and 9 was FOURMVT as its the only thing connecting the 2 symphonys apart from a tune that appears in both mvt 2s.

The female tennis player is LOVE

Er, am I getting the hang of this?

Somewhere above I gave the solutions. The surface of a cryptic clue always aims to deliberately put you off the scent, so you know you have to dig deep for alternative words or other possible meanings. The Mahler clue actually has nothing to do with Mahler, so Mahler's Fourth is the letter "l" and Ninth is an ORDINAL number.
A female is "a she" so the tennis champion is ASHE - definitely not female.

Struggling with this.Don't think it's an anagram of nana and pirate because I've tried everything.
Keep thinking opera (ra middle two letters in pirate) buffa (silly) but don't think it's right.

Those words don't make sense. Keep thinking of 'Opera Stars' or similar but can't see how. or nana = Gran ..something. Like others I used to polish these off in no time. Very sad to lose one's touch

the answer given by quiptic is Grand Opera

I suppose Gran + Dope + ra (central letters of pirate)
so you've all been on the right lines
I guess some clues have flaws in them ??

I would nitpick on this solution (I've just come across from the pedants' thread), because dope is a noun and silly is an adjective, so they should not, strictly speaking, be used as equivalents.

I see the anagram but that leaves "do" which = party I presume
