The tennis champion is ASHE (Arthur). The cryptic bit is a + she (female). It appeals to me because the solution is exactly the opposite of what the surface of the clue suggests.

I don't have a favourite but only ever do the Independent and increasingly the i paper (only 20p and less to read). The two papers have the same group of compilers and I think many work for more than one paper under different aliases. They are frequently very tricky - for me at least - hence more satisfying when you get eventually it. I often don't have the time to finish them. One of them got me half way across the Atlantic on a plane before I completed it.

My father had a biggish stroke in his late 80s and got his brain working again (new neural pathways or something) by amongst other things continuing to do the Telegraph cryptic on a daily basis. He could hardly speak after the stroke but slowly got himself back to full coherence. He died a couple of years ago, aged 95.

Tree it is.I used to do a lot of cryptic crosswords at one time but now my brain is fuddled.
I used to have a head full of favourite clues.

Any more devotees here of the BBC MM musical cryptic crossword? I usually manage to grind it out - still have 2 to get in the latest one. Used not to allow myself to read the rest of the magazine till I'd completed it but am slightly more relaxed these days...
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!
