Horse racing ... like it's motor equivalent ... has never particularly grabbed my attention, but it must be one of the few sports (well, the gambling part at least) which holds a mutual interest for both Toff and Scally.

I much prefer flat racing but will have small e/w investments

        on Sunnyhillboy and Killyglen.

Past winners of the race dont often win again but very often get get placed
so my main fancy would be Ballabriggs for a place only - around 7/2.

'Proper' racing resumes on Newmarket's Rowley Mile next Wednesday - see you there !

Prefer the jumps game myself and prefer Cheltenham to Aintree any day.

My tip for the National has been in my mind for several weeks: West End Rocker.

Synchronised is carrying top weight and the Gold Cup is always a tough race so ruled out for me. Black Apalachi is too old, ditto Hello Bud.

I also like the look of Junior, Calgary Bay and Treacle. You can all thank me later!

Hardly a sport. Bear baiting wasn't a sport, neither is hare coursing. So why should the use of cruelty to force horses to race, jump and kill themselves be considered a sport?

It's a money-making ramp of course for a privileged elite, and many people lose a lot of money betting: some become addicted to it. Fine if they are rich; not so good if they are poor and have just bet the week's food money...

Sorry, but it appears our esteemed Rumpole is a Tesco Express customer, whereas, of course my dear Vints, we only shop at Waitrose ..........!!

I'm thinking of paying Trenton Oldfield to fling himself in your paths as you head for Waitrose in a protest against elitism....

Any chance of getting Trenton to grasp Simon firmly by the hand as he does the self-flinging?!

But I spread my largesse far and wide, my other main supermarket is the Co-Op And, in fact, both rubbernecker and I purchase their bargain wines, and I get a Divi, so don't call me elitist!! Merely a Canny Shopper!

... my chrestomathy of naughty phrases does not include this, but I think I can see where he's coming from...

o, only when his nostalgie de la boue kicks in. Normally he gets his meat from Lidgate's in Holland Park Avenue, his charcuterie from Speck just round the corner, his cheese from the Fromagerie in Moxon Street, his specialist veggie requirements from Borough Market. I haven't identified from where he 'sources' his pâtisserie; his wines, of course, come from his personal négociants in Beaune and Bordeaux...
