Yes very sad news and although he had had a heart operation terribly sudden as he drove himself to the races for the first time since his operation on FRiday .

Poor Alan, near or at the top of my list of racing journalists. Always enjoyed his contributions to ATR's Sunday Forum.

Fantastic King George Chase at Kempton this afternoon! This is exactly why it's my favourite race in the jumps calendar. Just happened to be on the winner and each way on the third which makes it even better so can now get extra boxed sets for Christmas. Just 'pre-ordered' the VPO/Barbirolli Brahms cycle (out on Jan 22) together with Bruno Walter's Beethoven symphonies with part of the profit.

Not doing to too bad on the racing lately. Got a 100/1 e/w that came in third a few weeks ago and had a 16/1 winner last week. I'm usually terrible on the Flat but have picked up significantly over the past couple of years but still prefer the jumps. All winnings going into the retirement fund that no-one knows about
