Hi Alison, just wandered into the snug after an evening of CD's. Good advice to teamsaint re Gergiev's Mahler cycle. I persevered but in the end gave up on it and never got 4 or 9. Pretty lucky that my freebie for subscribing to BBCMM was Abbado's Rome Beethoven synphonies set with the BPO.

After my amazing luck at Cheltenham and Uttoxeter races over the weekend where I trousered over £200 in winnings, the next round of drinks had better be on me.

That was the tip BBC gave this morning. I don't bet, never been in a betting shop and don't follow racing (I think The National is a dreadfully cruel race) but there is a lady in her late eighties round the corner who every Saturday goes to the bookies for a flutter (not on the big races), I saw her yesterday and she fancies Imperial Commander as she's fond of the Twiston-Davies' horses and says they always do well for her.

She was dismissive of SeaBass as she said it's been cooked up by Wm. Hill.

                  Major Malarkey (100/1).

                  Like the name.

I'm here, ER! Been at work all day and now in relaxed mode.

Major Malarkey would be a decent e/w bet. My bets are Cappa Bleu, Seabass and Join Together as possible wins. Good each way bets are Swing Bill and Balthazar King. However, might change my mind by morning.

My final selection was: Seabass and Cappa Bleu (win) and Balthazar King, Quel Esprit, Roberto Goldback and, as my traditional 100/1 outsider, Swing Bill (all each way).

Let's see how many boxed sets I can get out of this!

I've only gone for one, Major Malarkey (e/w) for no other reason than I've always liked the word malarkey

And yet the Tesco - Boucherie Chevaline references look spookily prescient now.... Bologneighs-Gate only broke at the start of 2013 I think...?

As a wag said yesterday: it's the first time that checking out the office Grand National Sweepstake has made me feel peckish...

                          Or should that be Sweepsteak...?

I fancy Balthazar King, Sunnyhillboy and Treacle as e/ways. My sister is betting on Swing Bill, Soll and Across the Bay. I somehow think, that as the race is such a lottery it's not worth betting solely for a win unless you understand form (as Petrushka and Alison do) What a pity we cannot organise a R3 sweepstake here!

I don't think I heard any reference to that 'oss at any stage in the commentary just now, did it run?

Nor do I think the winner was mentioned by anyone on this thread

No box-sets for wor Pet this evening....

I'm just grateful that my bets were in my head and not at the bookies! Also, first time I've watched in years because of horses being have to put down, good to see that with the modifications it was casualty free.
