    The long boat game

Just heard Claire Balding on tv trying to make the boat race sound interesting!

    Well it isn't......is it ?

boring innit ... as young schoolboys we were dragooned into selling programmes on our patch of the tow path and embankment in Hammersmith ... however sprog is a dark blue so we will have a partisan moment this afternoon in and around the footie results ahem ...allez les bleus!
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Good bet-hedging phrase for the day, Calum!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Well, I have them as a home banker in my accumulator today but Motty reckons they will be resting players so maybe I should have left them out!

Bleus clairs here, as you know... I'm finding it interesting to hear the explanation of the best line through the bends depending on the deep fast water (counter-intuitive to one who enjoys four-wheeled motor sport where the straightest line via the apex of the inside of a bend is the fastest).

Also interesting to think that as Pinsent sat explaining the fast water point at low tide, the racers today will be passing some way above his head...

If you have a friend of a friend in one of the crews it's interesting. He was wearing the wrong colours for me but I kept quiet about that. Some time ago but the lunch at the riverside Pub was fun. Happy days

Ms Balding said many of the spectators treat it as one long pub crawl, now THAT'S interesting.

A first rate oarsman was sitting an important exam at Oxford. For what seemed like hours he sat staring at a blank sheet of paper. Knowing what an asset he was to the rowing team, the exasperated invigilator told him just to try and write something, so he wrote DAM! They had to fail him because he spelled it wrong.

Was that exciting enough for #1 ? Oxford were robbed through trying too hard. Sad.

Just like everything else in "sport". You either get dragooned into supporting one side, or are seen as a miseryguts for finding the whole thing too tedious and boring to be interested in. That way they condition you into having strong feelings about something there is nothing you can do anything about, and feeling helpless and (poltically) impotent.

The ancient Romans had it sussed: Bread & Circuses to keep the masses distracted. Much more effective than Religion...
