I loved NOT listening to music for a month, coming back my ears were fresh and clean .............what's the point of self isolating oneself from the sonic environment ? being on a beach NOT hearing the sea but La Mer (for example) seems so wrong to me , even though Debussy was a great composer....
I refer the highly esteemed Tamtam Tamtam, Esq to my #23.

Many years ago I bumped into my former school music teacher at our local railway station. He was carrying one of those little shoulder bags and I asked him. thinking he would be on a local shopping trip or meeting friends, whither he was bound. "Rome!" came the reply. I asked him about his luggage and he held up the shoulder bag: "It's in here!" He explained that wherever he went he took two of each item of clothing ie, shirt, underwear and socks on a wear one, wash one basis and bought everything else at his destination and dumped it before returning.
A few years later, I bumped into him again, this time on the train on the way back home. Asked him where he'd been. "Kenya!" he replied. And there was the shoulder bag again.

Glad to hear that fhg! Should you ever decide to visit this little island of ours, our world-famous Maltese hospitality will surely come to the fore!

We found that a month camping in France costs less that a week in a grotty rented place in the UK including the cost of getting there and travel etc

I think French Frank's idea of taking a guide to local flora and fauna is an excellent one. I might even be motivated to check up on the local flora and fauna 'round here, when I return! I've always been "impressed" by those who go on hols knowing everything there is to know about the places they visit, and yet know next to nothing about their own manors!
The other thing I would take, just in case the holiday turned out to be boring, would be a decent recording and full score of Schoenberg's "Moses und Aron", to work out how the Master deals with his tone rows!
