One of the better candidates -

    Mark Scott:

He sees the BBC as rather different from ABC. Not too different I hope. His approach to ABC would be helpful here.

For someone who has a private sector background, he has a surprising respect for the traditional role of public service broadcasting. His emphasis on innovation is not on downgrading programmes but on methods of access and distribution. On the latter, he is realistic rather than gushing.

Rather than emphasising that ABC has to compete with a wonderful commercial sector, he is doubtful whether much of radio in the commercial sector is viable. And he speaks like a person rather than using management jargon.

What is the role of a public broadcaster in an increasingly online-focused world?

According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.
