    The good old days?

From: Am I too loud? by Gerald Moore

While writing these lines I received a letter from the BBC informing me that they wish to transmit a song recital on every alternate Saturday night from October to March during the winter of 1961-2. Saturday night!
It is regarded by the pundits as a most valuable listening time. To have justified this, our listening figures must have increased enormously. (The BBC is able to assess with uncanny accuracy the numbers of every programme’s invisible audience.) This is all very encouraging.
Listeners will hear nothing but the finest music; they will certainly hear some of the loveliest voices in the world: Leontyne Price, Hans Hotter, Teresa Berganza, Gerard Souzay, Mattiwilda Dobbs, Nicolai Gedda, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Kim Borg, Joan Sutherland, Richard Lewis, Nan Merriman, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Christa Ludwig, Teresa Stich-Randall.
The accompanist will do his best.
My life, each morning when I dress, is four and twenty hours less. (J Richardson)

Still a (short-lived) glimmer of civilisation

I was pleased, on an early journey this morning, to hear Martin Handley refer to 'Mothering Sunday' and not 'Mothers' Day'.

Then, after a couple of popular chunks, he started to read out a banal email, so I switched to a CD.
