    Damaged boxes

I gather that some round here have been taking advantage of a recent offer at the Logitech site on Squeezebox Touch units. There is still an offer at http://www.logitech.com/en-gb/promot...?affid=3924300 for so-called "blemished boxes", which I take to refer to the units themselves, not the boxes they are delivered in. Reportedly the blemishes are minor and don't affect functionality. I don't know if these are a good buy, or if they might be shop returns or refurbished devices, though I have had some good deals on refurbs, such as a Fuji camera I bought around 2005 direct from Fuji. The deal is for a Touch at just under £130.

I've not bitten on these Logitech offers yet myself, as I have an earlier Squeezebox, and I don't know that I can really justify having yet another thing around. On the other hand I think the Touch model does offer more opportunities for playing back hi-res downloads, and some say the DAC is better, though many would still use an external DAC anyway.

The Touch can play to up 96/24 whereas the other models are limited to a maximum of 48/24.

The other models can play, say, 96/24 files but these are automatically resampled to 48/24 by the Logitech Media Server software (or the earlier Squeezebox Server) running on your PC before feeding the data to the Squeezebox device.

The Touch is definitely the way to go if someone is starting from scratch.

By the way, there are Squeezebox Controllers (the remote controls) available as 'Blemished Boxes' at £59.90. For anyone who fancies using a decent remote control with their Touch this seems to be quite a good deal.
