The London Olympics and the Proms 2012

Sorry if this has been discussed but I've just realised that these two events will cover much the same period of time.

I see the Olympics promise 'cultural events' - let's hope there is ample accomodation for everyone in the London area. Does anyone have their Olympic tickets yet?

I've been on about the accommodation problem since before last year's Proms finished! It could be a problem but the experience of cities that have held the Olympics is that the the hordes of tourists fail to materialise and that accommodation is plentiful.

I understand from a friend who works on the railways that trains will be running 24 hours a day during the Olympics.

The predicted drop in overall tourist numbers could mean that some reasonably-priced accommodation could be available as long as punters hold their nerve and wait for greedy hoteliers to blink first.

I thought the Olympics was on for two weeks, & the Paralympics presumably for the same period, making 4 weeks in total. The Proms go on for at least twice as long as that, don't they? In addition the paralympics are unlikely, unfortunately, to attract the same numbers as the Olympics, so putting less pressure on accommodation & transport.

holding your nerve may be the answer. Just check etap hounslow (£120 a night usually about £39) and Ibis, anything in town is £120 plus, at the moment.(checked for August 1st).

Marylebone Hall uni has a single at £54.......don't know how that compares with usual rates though.

A reasonable point, Floss. However, my best guess would be that the Proms will contain it's most mouth-watering concerts in exactly that first fortnight. The already announced Barenboim/Beethoven cycle for starters.

Six weeks quoted in the page I googled Flossie. Starting 20 something of July.

...what odds the maestro makes a speech before or after Beethoven 9 on Olympics opening night, July 27?

Especially as the Palestinians are fielding a team (at the Olympics, not the Proms ). Is the West-East Divan Orchestra appearing? (has it ever at the Proms?)

The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra has appeared several times at the Proms and I went to all but one of them. The Proms archive will provide full details.

The WEDO is peforming a complete LvB symphony cycle commencing with No. 9; such a block booking is very unusual at the Proms. They have performed there 4 or more times.
