I heard that too - cured all my antisemitism at a stroke!!!

    Rabbie Blue...

I could be wrong, not being a follower of the game, but didn't one top league footballer come out - either before or after quitting the game - only to subsequently commit suicide?

Justin Fashanu. A very high profile player, who came out after retirement.

He was famously a Barnardo's boy.
He did indeed come out, and remained high profile.
His death continues to be a matter of some uncertainty. He was connected to Stephen Milligan, and there are suspicions that there may be more to both of their deaths than was initially thought.
      Its worth looking into.

The really big step would be a current league player coming out.

No footballers yet, but there are Steven Davies, wicket-keeper for the England c ricket team, and Gareth Thomas, Welsh rugby captain, & Nigel Owens, a rugby referee, & John Blankenstein, a Dutch football referee.

The final 2 paragraphs in this article are trelling -

As if to illustrate this point, numerous professional footballers refused to appear in a February 2010 anti-homophobia video for fear of being ridiculed for taking a stand on the issue. That is the scale of the change in attitudes required - such an outcome would never occur with a campaign against racism or sectarianism.

Dan Woogs, a football coach and author, was reported by the Observer as stating that this vicious cycle will end with a young, openly-gay athlete coming through the ranks of his or her sport and thereby change the culture, rather than established stars coming out suddenly and unexpectedly.

(sorry - I know this thread isn't about sport & homophobia - perhaps the words 'athlete' & 'sport' should be replaced with 'priest' and 'church'. As if!)

But we're not actually talking about football as such - just the impact that a high profile footbaler coming out would have on public attitudes (especially school pupils').

I forgot to include this link in my last post -

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2...premier-league (scroll down the page a bit). So touching!

That's pure heterophobia, Flossie, and I'm appalled, insulted, disgusted, and, even better, grossly offended ... such stone-age bigotry should have no place on this forum!
