I bought a copy of Gramophone at a newsagent's today - not a world-shatteringly interesting piece of information, except to report that it was the first time that I had picked up the magazine for a few years, having previously been a subscriber for about 30 years and given up disappointed with the way things were going. I was prompted by the promise of a Richard Wigmore piece on Franz Schubert's last year. It proved to be quite a lengthy and fascinating study from which I gained a variety of new insights and which stimulated me to spend some time today re-visiting a few of the works discussed.
