I first noticed it a couple of months ago and now it is everywhere.

However, there is an interesting sidelight. From the OED:-

    adjective

    1. outstandingly bad; shocking: egregious abuses of copyright

    2. archaic: remarkably good.

Origin: mid 16th century (in egregious (sense 2)): from Latin egregius 'illustrious', literally 'standing out from the flock', from ex-'out' + grex, greg-'flock'. Sense 1 (late 16th century) probably arose as an ironical use

          No, emetic....
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Indeed! Friday night was bath night, and it was a lot warmer in the kitchen in front of the fire, but a galvanised finish is not kind to an infant bottom.

                      They were children, of course
Sally, I was born in 1950 & as a child would have to use the same bathwater as my brothers (or brother - I was 2nd eldest, so I only had one user before me). We had a bathroom with hot & cold running water. I also had my brother's clothes handed down (which caused problems as he went to a differfent secondary school).

what a relief to read this! from fleeting glimpses accidentally heard, i had supposed that some r3 listeners were actually enjoying the nauseating style of interview .... it's not quite gross enough to be comedy ...but very nearly is. i bet those particular americans don't refer to a 'bathtub' .... they sound like they bathe in a jacuzzi of molten chocolate truffle, perhaps accompanied by a favourite pedigree minature dog/s.

I'm sure that I'm not the only one that would be happy never to hear another word about the Oscars

I don't hear enough live music presented from america to make a fair judgement, but it seems every time i do it's like listening to music introduced by Frasier or Niles !!Maker Raffers look like a hard hitting investigative journalist. No doubt I just pick up on an unrepresentative selection though !!
