The trouble is, amateur, the ones I encounter are usually on my doorstep, so sidestepping is impossible! And you first have to listen to a five-minute spiel, cunningly worded to defy interruption, before you have the chance to send them packing. Cue to guiltily creep back inside and send off a cheque (without giving your address, of course).

Just assume a seductive air (assuming that's not your usual manner when answering the door to your manor) & invite them in for a cosy chat. If that doesn't work, start unbuttoning your shirt/blouse/cardigan/pyjamas.

Yes, I hate that too, especially white bra-straps! Even worse, bra-fasteners exposed above the low backs of summer dresses!
But coloured, black or lacy ones can be (just) revealed for, er, a certain effect... and there was that whole trend of underwear-as-outwear (don't worry, I'm too old for it now)
... but after all I said about heels, I better not go any further!

I also noticed a couple of headlines in national papers referring (in the Whitney Houston reports) to a 'bathtub'. I suppose they just copied the American press stories. Or do we say that now?

My 92 year old father will tell you that during his childhood in the 1920's (no electricity, no hot running water, no bathroom, no bath) that he and his 9 siblings would have a bathtub in the kitchen.
