Really? I don't have Sky, and there's far too much football on other channels for my taste.

I'm sure the football fans on here aren't among the primitive packs of scarf-clad yelling fools I see on television news. Surely not....

      ....
Agree with you completely Mary. On Sunday, I watched disbelievingly as programmes were systematically cancelled, rescheduled and put back in order for a posse of pundits to blather on about a game which had finished hours beforehand. I can just about accept programmes overrunning if a game is still in progress, but when it has finished and the stadium has emptied to have to listen to these empty vessels boring on and on beggars belief.

...and sub-Premiership coverage on BBC television is very poor, ansd disproportionate to the level of support.

That is perfectly true, and that's precisely the reason I also subscribe to SKY ... I wouldn't do so otherwise..

To sneer at the world's most popular 'Beautiful Game', merely because of the behaviour of some of its practitioners and onlookers, is a bit like scorning the music at a concert because some in the orchestra are palpably half-drunk, the conductor is a Prima Donna poseur, and some of the audience constantly indulge in a collective coughing-fit.

I have the basic package plus HD, which does not include the football, but does include Sky Arts 1 and 2. However, from next Friday, I will be able to enjoy Sky's new channel dedicated exclusively to Formula 1!! I can barely contain my excitement!!

Or scorning classical music because of the way it is presented on 'Breakfast'.

I haven't seen any posters doing that. The presentational style and safe repertoire choices on Breakfast are certainly open to criticism, but I don't think anybody has been disparaging the music itself.

To be fair, I don't think cloughie was saying that anybody had. He was saying that condemning football because of its supporters was a similar attitude. However, there must be some reason that football attracts the people it does.

The big difference is that a piece of music exists independent of its evanescent performers (and cannot be ruined by one performance), whereas any game of football is, by definition, a spontaneous act indivisible from its participants; unless you are arguing that all football matches are basically the same as any other.

Meaning what, precisely? That sounds like a remarkably patronising generalisation, rather like saying that Radio3 listeners are all snobbish and elitist. Perish the thought.....
