    Warsaw Variations

Did anyone hear the Radio 4 documentary about Lutoslawski and Panufnik in wartime Poland? They played (and survived) as a piano duo before they made a name for themselves as composers. A very informative programme...not for the specialist musician, perhaps...but another welcome example of Radio 4's coverage of musical subjects.

Yes, indeed. Fascinating. Just wish there had been more MUSIC! And, as you hint, why was it not on R3?

"On radio, we propose a limited adjustment to network remits and spend: reducing overall talent costs on Radio 1 and Radio 2; removing music opts for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland on Radio 1; and some reductions to live music and music talks on Radio 3." It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

So. Lord Patten, on the one network of classical music on national public non-commercial radio, we cut DOWN on explaining / discussing / contextualising music for the new and hungry audience you wish to attract? Hmm. Don't quite see the logic there, but.............

Thus R3 slips ever nearer to being simple musical wallpaper.

        DQF? Pah!

          some reductions to live music
It seems only a few months ago we were hurrah-ing about having more live music. It's a bit like the NHS or Education...always mucking about with the system.
