With the best of intentions, aren't you being a bit rose tinted Mr GG?

Start to go down that road. I promise you. The electorate will choose Jeremy Clarkson.

The intelligent among the electorate will choose Meryl Streep (although she'd presumably have to become a British citizen first).

We all recall what happened when Princess Margaret had the choice of marrying Townsend and giving up all her privilege. She ditched Townsend!

"democracy" is ok for choosing governments but we can't trust the proles to make the "right choice" of a president !

I think that many of us who object to the idea of monarchy still have much respect for the present queen.

However, once that character is removed from the role, especially with a less attractive successor, I imagine that the popularity of the institution will drop. And if he tries to impose a Queen Camilla on the country (as many will say, is constitutionally inevitable), I look forward to the fireworks.

                      good point.

The people at the top fought long and hard to get there. (well they had other people fight long and hard).

They don't give their privilege up easily.

They'll have to revoke all the anti-smoking legislation for a start

And, even in those pre-spin days, it was presented as the ultimate act of sacrificing her own happiness for the country!

You may well be right about this; I know several hardened republicans who nevertheless wish to see the monarchy in Britain last until the Queen dies or packs it in (almost certainly the former rather than the latter) and some of these suspect that it might begin gradually to implode of its own accord thereafter without any need for it to be overthrown per se.
