This is the set that is badly packaged: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sibelius-Ba...rolli+Sibelius

My copy is like yours but but has no extra spoke for a sixth CD, but perfectly fine.

        - I have the first, and don't find it awkward at all, let alone "badly packaged".

Hello Pet, if the Warner reissue is in a box with paper or cardboard sleeves then sure that is preferable but the EMI jewel case is fine - maybe takes up a little more shelf space!

That's because you have a degree in mechanical engineering, I imagine.

Does anybody know of any plain cardboard boxes that would work for rehousing CDs? I'm thinking of a plain version of the sort that usually house 5/10 CD sets.

This is the nearest I have found.

              But not ideal, and I don't want 25 !!

My total lack of any kind of technical knowledge is the stuff of family legend and it's odd considering my late father was brilliant at woodwork.

On the question of sticky envelopes housing CD's, the solution is to either carefully slit them with a knife or, if you are as technically hopeless as I am, throw the sticky ones away and buy a pack of the non-sticky sort normally used for self-recorded DVDs.

As you say not ideal and quite costly. I wonder who supplies Warner and other record companies with theirs, it would be great to be able to produce my own boxed sets and save shelf space.

I agree Pet, but have you noticed recently these have become more difficult to get hold of at a reasonable price. I used to get them from Poundland but they have stopped stocking them.

The boxes are of different sizes, too; the DG set I mentioned is already a tight fit for the 'envelopes' and I'm not sure that some of the replacement ones I've seen would fit!
Caution with the paper knife sufficed in this instance though!

Another set which given the stuck down treatment is the Norrington Romantics. (Is it to dispel vibrato?)

Right - I've taken the plunge, and ordered myself the REGIS 18-CD set of "Great Verdi Operas" as a sort of New Year present to myself. I know some of the performances have "cuts" in them, and REGIS remasterings can be unpredictable, but for under £14 for the box, I thought it would be an inexpensive way to make another (possibly final) "assault" on these works that so many Musicians that I respect admire so much, but which have never appealed to me. So, I'll be spending much of 2018 with Verdi - a prospect that horrifies me, but tempered with a large pinch of hope.

No Don Carlos in the box, I notice ...

Meant to reply to this. You're a brave fellow Ferney. Good luck. Personally I'd have gone for the EMI big Box, ( well I did actually £10.99 and some classic recordings). Anyway, let us know what you are listening to. Might be fun for a few of us to do the same operas and compare notes. Quite a few of the discs in my Verdi box are,I have to say, still unlistened to........

Anyway, My Barbirolli Sibelius box turned up.

All good on the practical side of things, so, what with fixing the Dyson already this week, I'm tempted to get the O.U. BSc Mechanical Engineering brochure ordered up.......

Oh yes, the Finlandia sounded excellent.......

That box has gone up in price, somewhat (and I don't mean Leontine!) - over £30 with P&P nowadays. (Some well-respected recordings there, too - the "Rigglealotto" is the same one as in the REGIS box.

I shall start my listening in the New Year - yes; it'd be interesting to compare notes! (Some operas not in the REGIS collection, though. If the hoped-for Damascene conversion occurs, I may very well get the WARNER/EMI box, too - but I'd still be Foscari-less!)
