    Schumann symphonies, Zinman.

actually they arrived today,so doesn't really count.

I bought them with money I was going to put on a horse, but didn't.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

Bruckner 9 - Berner Simphonieorchester, Mario Venzago Completes my Venzago complete set. Expensive way of doing it, but it’s always nice getting individual CDs as you go along.

Get a refund on those predictable Barenboims (Berlin I said BERLIN not Dresden ) and justly famous but wellknown Van Beinums and go after these instead....

Have I heard them? No. Just excerpts of (even quicker ) studio versions on Qobuz. They've become rare and might not even turn up....
              But they have that precious thing .... unfamiliarity, unpredictability;

              In other words: they're FUN.

I've already got those ubiquitous, erratic Rogner live recordings, as you say a bit of fun.

Barenboim's Berlin cycle has been with me for a few years, so the Staatskapelle set will be an interesting comparison.

True, the Beinum is well-known and famous, possibly too much discussion on the forum about him, probably over-familiar with us Bruckner fans, but I've only got symphony #8, so it will be interesting to get the others.

BeefO, the new Barenboim set is with the BERLIN Staatskapelle not Dresden. The van Beinum 9th is superb. 1950s mono but still superb.

Thanks Petrushka, I keep mixing up orchestras that have either staatskapelle or Dresden in the title!!!

That Ziinman set is good, but I've only played it through once, reason being that I gave precedence to the Yannick Nezet-Seguin that I bought around the same time.

Ubiquitous? According to Berky they've only ever been on Weitblick, a label devoted to live concerts in Germany, Austria and elsewhere, mainly of Bruckner. (You come across the Brahms/Schoenberg one fairly often). They are all different from the Berlin Classics/Brilliant releases.

Have you seen these Weitblick concerts elsewhere?

Other than the fact that I really like most of the performances in this earlier Abbado Mahler cycle (and almost wore out the LPs of the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 7th), I'm not wholly sure where my obsessive desire to get hold of:

has come from but, ever since reading some comments that these remastered recordings from Universal Korea were a great improvement over the original CD issues, I've been trying to get hold of this set. There was an earlier CD box where the symphonies were a bit crammed onto discs, à la the Sinopoli set, and which received some rude comments about the sound being at a fairly low level, requiring cranking up the volume. This Korean issue increases the number of CDs by two so (mostly) seems to avoid the cramming issue.

I thought that I was doomed to complete failure as it was shown as "no longer available" on a Korean website and I could not get Tower Records Japan (which claimed to be able to get hold of it with some delay) to make the link with Buyee. I then found it on HMV Japan on Sunday (it wasn't there before) and ordered it, with a supposed two month wait so I thought that it would be yet another, "sorry but it's not available". So, I was surprised and delighted to receive an e-mail earlier to say that it was on its way. Despatched via the dreaded EMS so I'll have to stump up French import duty, TVA and Chronopost's rip-off "handling fee" but I'm much looking forward to finally getting my hands on it.

                              Finally arrived!!

I’m over the moon!! - 1, 7 & 8 so far are fantastic! Barenboim is so underrated in Bruckner.
