Boulez, Messiaen, Dutilleux and Varèse, but no Jolivet in my collection. A bit of a blind spot for me. I don’t know much about his music. I’ve ordered this 4 CD set of recordings ranging from late 1950s to late 1970s, mainly with the composer conducting. Doesn’t contain any symphonies or ballet works, though.

I bought this a while back having been impressed with the Suite liturgique that I heard on an internet station; sadly this version is different (choir not solo) and I wasn't as taken by it, or by much of the other music, tbh. But might give them all another spin.

As George Bush said, ‘no man ever walks into the same river twice’.

Thanks for the details - for some reason there is not much info about this set.

Why didn’t I think to do that?

Having had a sudden memory of a World Record Club LP - gone to Oxfam, alas - with Mstislav Rostropovich playing the Cello Concerto (and I confess I had to look up the B side - the Five Ritual Dances), duly ordered.

Jolivet had a very strong influence on Messiaen at a certain point, but IMO his music is a lot less interesting. Also I seem to recall those recordings sounding a bit harsh.

I’ve listened to a few pieces from the download today. The Messiaen forerunning is interesting. The sound is coarse in places (some of the recordings are quite old now), but I quite like it. First thoughts are that his music is more interesting than some of Dutilleux's! I say that for no apparent reason!

Two promising new books on their way here - Yuval Noah Harari's Homo Deus, the follow-up to his Sapiens, and John le Carré's sort of autobiog, The Pigeon Tunnel - he was on the radio explaining the title.
