Arrived yesterday and watched tonight: Smetana: Má vlast - Chamber Orchestra of Europe, conducted by Harnoncourt. A live performance on DVD, with a second DVD of the rehearsals, recorded at the Styriarte Festival in June 2010. An absolutely captivating performance, and the rehearsals are witty, fascinating and full of insights.

Arrived today - Joachim Raff - Piano Suites vols 2 & 3 played by Alexander Zolotarev. Also arrived yesterday, the ongoing Naxos Liszt series, volume 42 which arrived yesterday and includes the fearsomly difficult first versions of the "Paganini etudes". Not listened to any of these yet as I have other things which require my listening to first (plus we've just finished decorating)!
                  Best regards,
                  Jonathan

Somehow this passed me by at the time of its release. With Mary Dullea and Darragh Morgan involved, it promises to be very fine (I have to admit I am not as familiar with Robin Michael's playing).

I've just taken delivery of a 2 CD set of The Mines of Sulphur, but Richard Rodney Bennett. I shall try it out this evening, with some trepidation, it looks like it might be tough going. I vaguely recall seeing it on the telly in black and white way back in the sixties, when I was a child: no idea why I watched it and I wouldnt have understood anything about the plot or the music.

I'm waiting on the complete Beethoven Symphonies with Nickolaus Harnoncourt conducting the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. I'm presenting a 2.5 hour lecture in honour of this conductor on 26 May and want to play some excerpts from these symphonies which were widely praised at the time of their release.

Question please: which one is the best out of all of them? I'm needing some expert advice.

Also awaiting delivery of a Beethoven symphonies set, but Rattle and the Berliners, rather than Harnoncourt and COE.
