Rattle is one of few conductors (imho) who can 'do' swing, and I was pleased (and pleasantly surprised!) that he got the BPO to swing along with him; I could envisage him more readily with the LSO in such repertoire.

PS: Zimerman (pianist) not Zimmermann (violinist), btw. I know you've been listening to the Martinu Violin concertos!
I still love Rattle’s Jazz album recorded with the London Sinfonietta and Harvey and the Wallbangers

A pretty good Ebony concerto and Prelude, Fugue & Riffs!
Just dug out; might give it a spin later, but the Lang Lang Goldbergs might come first.

Perils of autofill.........corrected, thanks... do catch up on that Martinu...as a Martinu Obsessive (who knows most previous recordings) I can only say it is totally 5-Star! In sound to die for. And as you know, one of my Records of the Year.....just glorious....! Two of the truly great 20thC Violin Concertos....

Never got round to replacing my heavily played LP version with the CD option. I might well give it a streaming.

Yes, I've played it a few times.
You might remember me wondering why number 2 came first!

AS I said at the time possibly to lure new listeners in by virtue of its more dramatic/"Romantic" opening, given many will be streaming (rather than buying the physical disc)... TBH, I rarely play the two back-to-back; IIRC I did on my initial encounter here, simply because of the sonic and musical quality presented to my ears (via Qobuz, SACD later...)

No.1 has a very unusual, fascinating decades-long backstory of course..... which hopefully will be found online or read in the booklet...

I think the release coincided with Prom performances 1987? ‘Sweet Sue’ is lovely!

That would be about right. I got my first (not very good) CD unit a matter of weeks after getting The Jazz Album LP, I think.

Just had notification that this SACD is on its way, having ordered it a month or so ago. Only the Grocer's Fudge is in Beethoven's own transcription. The Symphony is as arranged by Schwarwenka.

My eyes skimmed over this, and did a double take, as I first thought it was arranged for Schwanda the bagpiper; now that WOULD be something.

It's a very good recording - the Scharwenka is a superb transcription and works very well and I think the Beethoven sounds less problematic than it usually does in this performance too.
                        Best regards,

Delivered today. Wow! This 7th finale really is a knees-up! Superb. That 1901 Steinway has a great sound, too.

Op. 134 is quite a triumph, too. I have not felt much of a draw towards returning to previous recordings of this, on the face of it, straight forward transcription. Here it comes across as much more than that. I will be returning to this, soon.

Now waiting for the new Mark Viner Alkan CD which I've just this minute ordered. Interested to hear how he plays with the "Ride in Hell" (as Raymond Lewenthal described Op.39 no.7) and the Trois Marches from Op.37 (not just the one that I play)
                            Best regards,
