In the article in the link, it says: The final suite, composed for a five-string instrument, poses its own special challenges to any string-player, and Podger’s solution here is adroit: she switches to the viola for the lower-lying phrases, and thanks to some extremely clever engineering and patching you’d be hard-pressed to spot the joins.

I have yet to hear it, or read the CD notes, obviously.

Ah, shades of Pat Kop's solution to Beethoven's piano cadenza arrangement for the first movement of Op. 61(a).

Interesting to read, in the programme notes, that she did try the 6th Suite out on a 5 string instrument but decided to rely on her own violin plus the occasional foray into viola territory.

I did a night shift starting at 22.00 and finishing at 07.00 this morning before grabbing a couple of hours sleep before working between 10.00 and 17.30. At bank holiday rate!

So, I've treated myself to an SACD version of the mighty Ida Haendel and Paavo Berglund conducting the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in one of the first Lps I ever bought. Sibelius. Violin Concerto coupled with three of the Humoresques. Original artwork instead of the slightly cheap cd re-issue.

Imho, one of the very finest recordings of violin playing EVER! A tantalising three week wait for delivery but totally worth it.

                    Leifs: Edda Part II (SACD):

That fine fellow Robert von Bahr has kindly offered to sell me an advance copy. It is due for official release on June 7th. If the SACD of Part I is anything to go by, it should be worth getting to hear a.s.a.p. Mr. Bahr suggested that a download at the time of the official release would cost less than the SACD but I find it difficult to play back downloaded surround files on my system and am eager to hear it.

Just been delivered, in its environmentally friendly, plastic-free gatefold case. It will have to wait until I have listened again to Edda Part I 'The Creation of the World'.

Just now dropped onto the mat, a DVD of Ken Russell's "The Rainbow" (1989). Somehow this passed me by when it was doing the flea pits; I've no idea if it's any good; I just bought it in reminiscence of having studied DH Lawrence's novel at "O" Level.

Still to arrive as part of the same order: "I, Daniel Blake" and a biopic on "Rosa Luxemburg".

That Abbado set from Bargains (many thanks) is shown as on the way, just got to wait for the “unit” to get back from the menders....

I saw it when it was first released. I was stoked up, expecting a film on a par with Women In Love. Really wish I'd managed my expectations - The Rainbow is a very poor film by Russell's standards, dull and unimaginative and with second-rate actors in the leading roles. The contemporaneous BBC adaptation was much better.

Shame they couldn't find room for Mahler's 10th
