I was going to skip this but a few passages in the excerpts amused me - anyone who can write like this can't be bad.
Towering over Nicholas’s childhood was his father Claude, a man of immovable Victorian principles and ferocious prejudices. Claude loathed music, which gave him indigestion, despised all forms of heating as ‘effete’, and believed that ‘when dealing with foreigners the best plan was to shout at them in English’.
According to the latest tracking updates, an embarrassment of boxed sets are down for delivery tomorrow:
Sibelius Symphonies and Beethoven Piano Concertos (Berliner Philharmoniker/Rattle et al CD/Blu-ray sets)
Scarlatti Sonatas (Scott Ross); Beethoven String Quartets (Cremona SACDs); Vivarte Vol. 2 (3 for 2 from amazon.de).
The Berliner Philharmoniker discs have just been delivered, over an hour before the start of the estimated delivery window. I do not intend to complain. At 9 this morning the amazon.de order tracking had been revised to show delivery put back until tomorrow. By 9:30 it was shown as out for delivery.
[A little over two and a half hours later, the 3 for 2 items have arrived. I am glad to find the Vivarte box (Vol 2, that is) has decent booklet notes. I pretty much expected just track listings but they are much more extensive than that. The Beethoven Cremona SACD box has a notification on the bach which reads "HD DOWNLOADS stereo and surround available at audite.de". Consuting that site I find that had I ordered the set direct from that site, I would have also got a free mp3 download. I see not mention of a way of claiming such if the box is bought through amazon.de for shipping to the UK. I will email them to see if/how I migh be able to download such mp3s without charge. The Scarlatti box has no indication of re-mastering of the fairly early digital recordings, though by 1984, from when the earliesr recordings in the set date, digital recording technology has improved somewhat over those made in the late '70s and early '80s.]

Reason: Update.
Not waiting for in the post, or indeed off to the shop for, but certainly eyeing up with the intention of buying in the new year, two books: The Musical Language of Pierre Boulez by Jonathan Goldman and Music Lessons: The Collège de France Lectures written by Boulez, translated by Jonathan Goldman.
I already have too many books, but oh well... can't resist.
Decided to treat myself for Christmas so ordered the following from JPC in Germany (they sent me a discount voucher so it would have been rude not to use it): Rubinstein: Sonate für Violine & Klavier Nr.3, Gouvy: Klaviermusik zu 4 Händen, Brüll: Symphonie e-moll op.31, Graener: Werke für Klaviertrio and Kalliwoda: 6 Nocturnes op.186 (which also included Schubert's Arpeggione sonata). It's been dispatched so hopefully should arrive soon
Yes, I had a JPC voucher and couldn't resist - went for the Dausgaard box of complete Langgaard symphonies plus the Brilliant box of Villa-Lobos string quartets, all of which is music I don't know at all so am really looking forward to exploring.
Also ordered the Brautigam box of complete Haydn keyboard music from Europadisc, using their daily CD label discount - I have the Schornsheim set but have succumbed to the many recommendations for Brautigam on this forum.
Hoping all this arrives before Christmas, as I have a few days off which will be ideal for some heavy-duty listening.

One of my discoveries of the year, thanks to a comment somewhere on the forum.
Maybe I now need to investigate the Langgaard.
Bit of a wait to come. It will not be released until next year. Also something of a bargain from amazon.co.uk, who misspell Vega as Viga.
(ASIN: B07JZRR79B)
Actiually 13 discs. See fnac for details (scroll down).
[I note that Disc 12 is Turangalîla-symphonie, which I guess is the Le Roux recording. Crossed fingers that the transfer is a major improvement on previous CD releases of this recording.]

Good one Alison, I decided against as I would have been buying it for a 5 Bruckner Symphonies and the later Beethoven Symphony set. I’m sure you’ll get loads of enjoyment from Sir Georg!
