Last week's Bal really captivated me and I thought the 'clear air' Harnoncourt cymbal-free 7 excerpt was wonderful.

    So...........

    Bruckner 3, 4, 7 & 8 - Harnoncourt, VPO, BPO & Royal Concertgebouw. Teldec.

Bruckner 9 & ''Like A Stone From The Moon" workshop CD - Harnoncourt. RCA Red Seal.

Handel's 'Messiah' directed by Emanuelle Haim.... I heard some bits of it on the car radio in an 'innocent ear' context and found it absolutely 'rivetting'!

Discovered Anthony Collins while listening to a podcast last night of Building a library of Sibelius 7 (Saturday 18th September 2010).

I have broken my CD-buying holiday and ordered the Eloquence CDs of the complete symphonies.

        Recorded 1952 - 1955 Kingsway Hall, Mono.

Can't wait for them to arrive!!!!!

Here's an interesting article/review on the recordings.

Two DVDs have arrived this week and last, both conducted by my much lamented maestro(although he never liked that term), Claudio Abbado.) One with the Gustav Mahler Jugendeorcheste playing sSchoenberg Pelleas et Melisande and the other Bruckner Symphony no.5 with, ofcourse, his master symphony orchestra The Lucerne Festival Orchestra. There were some slight issues with the playing though but although I am being very very picky here, very enjoyable. Especially, imo, a difficult work to bring off as a whole.

As mentioned elsewhere, I am eagerly awaiting the release and delivery of the first two symphonies of Charles Ives (Melbourne Symphony Orchestra/Sir Andrew Davis) on a Chandos SACD. If the performances he conducted of the 2nd and 4th, etc. in 1996 are anything to go by, this new survey will be something special.

Out of interest, are they hybrid SACDs, and what SACD player (if any) do you use?

They are indeed hybrids. They derive, it appears, from 96/24 PCM masters rather than DSD originals. The downloads (and sample extracts) are already available from the Chandos site, but we have to wait a little for the discs to be released. I have a number of SACD playback devices, ranging from laptop to Cambridge Azur 650BD. I only very rarely avail myself of the surround option, however. Too much messing around getting the balance right, etc.

                      Just received this email:
                      Hello,
We thought you'd like to know that we've dispatched your item(s). Your order is on the way, and can no longer be changed.

which is Wagner, The Operas/Solti at the bargain price. However, I won't be able to relax until it has arrived!

My copy of Robert Crawford's biography, Young Eliot - From St Louis to The Waste Land, has arrived to coincide with Jeremy Iron's recording of The Waste Land on
R4, this afternoon, (7 Feb). A fine interpretation -now on CD-R- will be placed alongside Alec Guinness and Paul Scofield readings on my shelves. Helpful, too, in breaking through the nuances of Eliot's transcendence of time, is a 90mins, evocative ARENA documentary, (BBC2,2009), which also has Seamus Heaney reading extracts from The Waste Land and considers its relevance today. Almost an embarrassment of riches!

Yes, indeed, a terrific read - all of 'em! Worth acquiring, too, is Richard Eyre's National Service which cover his reign at the NT and two biographies of Laurence Olivier, Olivier by Terry Coleman and Olivier by Philip Ziegler which cover the early years of the NT at Chichester, The Old Vic, 1962-1976, followed by the turbulent years at the South Bank and his deteriorating health.

I shall be interested in acquiring this disc myself, ER, as King Olaf received its world premiere performance at what might be called my local hall, the Victoria Hall in Hanley, a place I've performed in myself (well, as part of a choir festival when I was 11!)!
