    Dumbing Down

    Dear All,

I am sure that I am just an old Curmudgeon, but I do not like the new Radio 3 presentation style.

    What does everyone else think?

I understand that R3 needs more listeners if it is to survive and that Senior Management has decided that dumbing down is the way to get them but is making it more like Classic FM really the right way to go?

I want more music not more talk. I am not interested in the personality or domestic arrangements of the presenters, indeed, I prefer it if the all sound the same. I do not think it is edgy and relevant for the presenters to wind up the guests, I think it is a pain. Similarly I am not much interested in the lives of the performers, what I want is to hear them perform.

I was wondering if it might be possible to use social networking tools for all this new stuff and keep the airwaves for music. If the presenters have been to a night-club with the performers then why not make a web-page about it and refer the listeners to it – you could have pictures too? Don’t waste valuable air time blathering about it.

How about a rule of thumb that there should be no more than 15 seconds talk between the music?

One of the glories of R3 in the “old days” was the way that it was not afraid of silence, if there was nothing to say then nothing was said.

All these gushing “14-going-on-40” female presenters are really driving me nuts.

      'Morning, Eric .

Well, I spent quite a long time with the Controller yesterday discussing all this. We don't hold many high cards, I'm afraid. More later (I'm still in London atm), but it's a case of 'Blessed is he that expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.'

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Thanks FF for that feedback. Also many thanks for your perseverance. Even though we know that CR3 will not admit anything the fact that you keep chipping away with a little help from your "friends" will keep the challenge before him. If the chipping stops the erosion will continue. He has a difficult task we know and cannot rely on colleagues in the current BBC to help in these times of DQF. What they mean by quality isn't what we might think. The old Huw Wheldon adage of "Make the Popular Good and the Good Popular" is long gone from the corridors og BH.

Good for you Eric. ENOUGH of this 'dumbing down'

That's what happened with our once great CBC Radio 2.

The morning classical program is a travisty.

                NO intelligent conversation here anymore.

Years back we had a program called 'Off the record' where the announcer would go into detail about the composer and recording '

I learned so much about classical music.

I pity those here who don't know what our once great broadcaster USED to be

pmartel I agree with what you say but as the oldies, [me!], die out, will the new young listeners ever know what they are missing?

What SHOULD happen is the current way of doing things INTELLIGENTLY should be kept on(?) by the newer generation.

I don't know about you, BUT here, I'm really noticing a trend of sloppiness. Radio and tv announcers can't read for crap.

The local 24 radio news channel CONSTANTLY does NOT give the correct time and constantly stumbles when they read the articles. There is NO sense of professionalism anymore.

When I was in Montreal last summer, I decided to check out our CBC Newsworld channel on cable as I don't have cable. I was totally appauled at the quality (or lack of) when I watched it.

Media people should be appauled at their current form of presentation.

Sadly this generation is all about style and NO substance. Part of why I DON'T have cable even though I work for a cable company

why be appalled - the content is the adverts - the other material is solely there to hook the unwary consumer - Dj's have no interest in presentation merely ego massageing (their own inflated self worth)

I was attracted to listen to R3 , and initially "Breakfast" in particular by the fact that R3 was almost unique in avoiding the endless presenter led babble (egocentric usually), leaving me free to enjoy the music.

This was in the last few years.
I now usually last less than 5 minutes before the endlessly repetitive music or intrusive chat send me CD wards.

Someone might usefully point out that pop stations at least have a constant supply of fresh (if not always very good) ,material. Since R3 Breakfast almost completely ignores new music, the programming very, very easily becomes incredibly dull.
                          It doesn't have to ,though.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

                            Thanks for your replys

                            Dear All,

Thank you for your replies; is there really no one who thinks the new style is a good thing?

I was half expecting to get a flaming!

Presumably someone must like or they wouldn't be doing it?

FF, I hope you don't mind me asking, but how is it that you have the ear of CR3?

Does it really not make him cringe when he listens to the new style of presentation?

                            Eric
