Mahlerei was asking what became of young Dominic Guard after Picnic. This is one he made earlier

I see from Wikpedia he's now a fully accredited child psychotherapist

Oh, I saw it about 18 months ago and have you also seen The Bicycle Thieves (1948) directed by Vittorio De Sica? Oh, and Jean-Luc Godard Bande ร  part

So glad this has turned up some wonderful anecdotes to cheer the murky old day. I remember the Odeon, Leicester Square when it opened and how thrilled I was as a very small child with the organist and the coloured lights on him. Don't remember the film though

#46 Yes, Richard, R1 is proscribed for North America but these films can also be viewed on a "universal" DVD player which accommodates Regions 1 to 6. I've had a Sony region free DVD, or universal player for some years now. Worth checking as a R2 (British) version may also be available.

There so many choices! Two B&W comedies, both starring Alec Guiness, come to mind though: Lavender Hill Mob and Our Man in Havana. If I'm in a mood for sagas: The Godfather (all 3 parts) fits the bill. I'll watch Casablanca or Brief Encounter anytime; also A Night to Remeber, How Green Was My Valley. I know it's Hollywood Wales but I still get a lump in my throat at the end.

Thanks for that Stanley I'll check it out. A relation of mine had a small part in the 1930 Warner Bros musical "Sweet Kitty Bellairs" and I see Warners have a Region 1 DVD of it which I'd like to see, just for the record!

And I recently rewatched Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources - marvellous movies both. Oscar winners at the time I think. Wouldn't be today - ability to speak French is held against Mr Romney

Depressing weather? It's been a lovely sunny day in Dundee today. Cold, though.

If you want to see some real snow, google for this film: Snowdrift at Bleath Gill

It's guaranteed to make you feel warmer, and demonstrates that, as we Scots say, there's always someone worse off than yourself.

It's a classic British Transport Film of the 50s. It's been on BBC4, and it's available on You Tube. I'm at work, where You Tube doesn't reach, so I can't post a link.

                                For suspense - Rififi
The 1930's The Adventures of Robin Hood - for the swordfighting. Music is good too!

And how I hope I'd enjoy this American B&W film, probably a B movie, if it could be identified. I've been trying to find its title for many years.

Sunny country, outside a (golf?) clubouse, 2 men dressed in summer suits.

Man A. "Will you propose me for membership?"
                                Man B. "Yes."

Scene switches to a committee meeting. Man B proposes man A.
Chairman holds a vote. A bag is passed round for either a black or white ball to be put in by the members.

Bag emptied out. 1 black ball.

Back outside. Man B to Man A. "Sorry, you were blackballed".
Man A goes away whereupon Man B opens his hand in the palm of which is a white ball.

                                What was all that about?
