    On this day...

How about a thread for anniversaries of things various (mostly music)?

    I'll start with:

...in 1944 the Philharmonie in Berlin Kreuzberg was destroyed.

And what a wonderful celebration it was, doversoul, especially those extraordinary Heine settings in the second half.

(OT, I have definitely noticed an increase in chamber music and recitals for Po3 in recent months and a reduction in orchestral concerts. Whether this is for cost reasons or not, I am strongly in favour. I thought the balance was tilted far too much in favour of orchestral concerts before)

Palestrina died in 1594 and Kreisler was born in 1875.

According to the host of Countdown (and who am I to doubt him?), the first public flushing lavatory went into service on this day in 1852, in Fleet Street. This was presumably music to the ears of those involved in its design, construction and installation, and possibly of those in need.

& 'Fleet Street' (aka the newspaper industry) still needs flushing out
