Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Richard- I've just booked it for next Tuesday!!

Aaah the sound of moving goalposts - you were praising Sky's arts programming one minute, decrying it the next - that was the point I was making. A lack of grip on the here and now is something I've come to expect from you, Panyan

Oh I saw it months ago in a proper cinema, which is the environment in which it was intended to be seen - I can throw in a few spoilers if you like

Panjandrum simply said that he wasn't overly keen on watching one programme on Sky Arts. You somehow take that to mean that he was "decrying Sky's arts programming"- that's quite a leap, even for you, AmDram.

And you talk about moving the goalposts........

Ah yes, the joy of a modern cinema- the crunching of popcorn, the idiots texting on their mobile telephones, the exorbitant prices, the interminable trailers and adverts, the deafening sound levels....I'm quite happy to watch the film for half the price, with no ads or annoying distractions, in high-definition, and at a time of my choosing, in the comfort of my own living room.

And no need to worry about spoilers; I've read the book, and I've got the BBC series on DVD, so I think I've a pretty good idea about what happens.

Didn't the London Musicians Collective have their HQ in one of those back then? I'll check if I can find any photos.

LMC was in Gloucester place (I think ?) I do remember doing gigs there in the 90's when the electricity would go off at random when a train went past ! nice pub over the road though

Ams, all I can say is, lucky you. There are many advantages to living round here but having cinemas - beyond an unspeakable fleapit - isn't one of them, so I'll just have to put up with it. The last time I was in London the friend with whom I was staying did point out the pond on Hampstead Heath where George Smiley goes for a swim.

I know the book backwards, and have a rough idea about the film thanks to various reviews and an earlier thread. I didn't see the TV adaptation, but don't think anything will surprise me unduly.

Because I went with a friend who worked for years in television I was able to go as his guest, free gratis and for nothing Don't ask me how - I'm just very grateful

As to the book and the BBC TV series and the film in question - I shouldn't rely too much on your memory of the first two - the film is beautifully done but has some some additions, some reframing of the story and lots of bits are left out so you might end up very confused.

Just chill out & enjoy the film

I think we can guess though AmDram: sponging off others again.

Trouble with Sue Perkins is SHE'S OVEREXPOSED AND GETS ON MY NERVES!!

But gets on my nerves anyway, with her self-conscious attempts to make a joke of everything, her awful repetitious coyness about sex, her oo-err persona. She conducts an orchestra for three minutes and then cries at her own "triumph".
CELEBRITY - AAARGH!!! It all makes me think of the spaceship full of hairdressers from the Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy.

Wasn't she on breakfast TV once? Should have stayed there with the hardboiled eggs and cold coffee.
