Infuriating that it's orgs like the Taxpayers Alliance that draw such inefficiencies to public notice. The alternative has to make bureaucracy community-accountable, as Ken Livingstone had started doing with the GLC in the early 80s. Which was the main reason Thatcher abolished the GLC: we can't have socialist solutions that actually work, now, can we?

The Fraud, Error and Debt Taskforce will continue to drive forward this activity over the next few years, helping to facilitate collaborative working between central and local government, and the public, private and civil sector in order to enhance our approach.

fishy that, since i distinctly remember a r4 'file on 4' about the significance of tory cuts to hmr&c itself: private and central govt fraud being way beyond hmr&c current resources, detection of more sophisticated fraud being dropped, as 'a lost cause'.

so that's what all the hogwash about tax credits and benefit fraud distracts from ..... otherwise there'd be no point in the 'task force' existing, as it's of limited use.
