There are some statistics re UK youth unemployment over nearly the last two decades here, handsomefortune, as well as some other useful info.

I'm not sure whether the temporary drop in unemployment in the 1990s may have been in part due to a policy whereby it was easier to claim incapacity benefit (which allowed such people to be removed from the unemployment statistics). The Labour government subsequently tightened up on this, which meant more people having to claim unemployment benefit, and that policy has been continued (in fact intensified) by this government.

The number of young people not in education, employment or training has risen to a record high of 1.16m, official figures show.

Almost one in five 16- to 24-year-olds in England were "Neet" between July and September this year, according to statistics published by the Department for Education. The figure has risen by 137,000 compared with the same period last year.

The figures also show that just over 21% of 18- to 24-year-olds are not in education, work or training.

Official figures published last week show there were 1.02 million unemployed 16- to 24-year-olds in the UK between July and September this year, also a record.

That was a policy of the Thatcher & Major governments - another ruse was the Enterprise Allowance Scheme whereby people who were registered unemployed could start up a business & be given an allowance (I think for a year); it didn't cost a lot less than keeping them on the unemployment register, but Thatcher could claim that unemployment was lower than it actually was. She was desperate to stop the figures from rising as she had won the 1979 election with the infamous 'Labour isn't working' slogan. The advantage for the people starting a business was that you got a reasonable income from the State without the hassle you got from the job centre about interviews etc. Of course, most 'businesses' were no such thing (I knew quite a few people who started massage services) & folded after the allowance stopped.

The UK GDP data is set out in the table (below) for each quarter from the beginning of 2008. Because estimates are revised regularly, I also include the initial estimate produced by the Office for National Statistics, alongside the most up-to-date estimates. Bear in mind that, on average, the estimates have been revised downwards over the recession. It is clear that the recession was deeper than first thought, with output falling by 7.4 per cent, and it started earlier and finished sooner.

Output is still 4 per cent below its level at the start of the recession. George Osborne is now responsible for the longest-lasting slump in more than a century.

With all due respect to you Calum, this article by Doug Short is absolute tripe. While the comparative youth of a leader is often presented as broadly meaningful - Blair, Clinton - in reality it makes no difference other than perhaps that such people tend to be less mature. As for older age, that is highly selective. Menzies Campbell was seen as too old when a year older than the apparent saviour of English football, Harry Redknapp, is now. Ron Paul currently gets a big youth vote and Reagan was supposedly AOK.

Next, if anyone young in the countries mentioned has the least need for grievance, it is the average male. Women generally get a particularly raw deal as do other minorities. This, of course, is not to say that there are always direct links between actions of conflict and justified cause. Then we are supposed to accept from these charts that the revolutions are being led by the 0-4, 5-9 and 10-14 age groups. That of course is crackers. Also, if you went back 50 years, the shape of the charts would be similar.

Looking at the 15-39s - and in such countries where there is lower life expectancy, it would be stretching the point to describe males aged 35-39 as young - the differences with the US amount to what? 10 percentage points? Plus there is a question of vision. The majority of young in their countries, and ours, have a framework of political comprehension that has only two alternatives. One - more capitalism, not less. Two - some centralized notion, arguably fascist, often based on fundamentalism.

The dialogue worldwide about generation is focussed on the haves in society who tend to be older. This then is depicted as a problem with the old. It is a tendency which promotes youth to Aryanism and makes anyone older of low income dispensable. It is often promoted by the well-heeled middle aged, just like Short may be himself, and for the sake of their kids who are in the main privileged anyway. The telltale sign, apart from all of that nicking of trainers and ipods last year, is the adulation given to someone like Zuckerberg. He is seen as universally cool because, rather than irrespective, of his wealth and also because of his youth.
