Randy Newman advice.

Oh dear.
I have spent about 40 years listening to pop and rock music, and managed to evade his genius almost completely.
Genius is a word I use selectively. Just spent 2 days ln the company of "Songbook vol 1". Just incredible stuff. How can I have missed out for so long?

On the upside, what an utter joy to discover.

Any recommendations for further listening, please, pop pickers?

I love Sail Away (1972) and Land of Dreams (1988-89) but in my humble opinion you can't go wrong with any of them.

I'd have thought the album "Sail Away" should be at the very top of your list. It's an absolute classic.

My current favourites as, 12 Songs, Little Criminals, Sail Away and Good All Boys.

I have a ten of his albums and would be so bold as to say that they are all good. Sail Away, of course, also Little Criminals, Good Old Boys right up to Bad Love and Harps and Angels. Favourite song? So many.. "Falling in Love" from Land of Dreams always gets me going.

I have seen him live twice at the Festival Hall - once a few years ago with a full symphony orchestra and once where he accompanied himself on the piano - both great evenings. He talks a lot too at concerts - unlike Mr Dylan who is monosyllabic at best.
