There's no dispute, mercia. I read the article incorrectly and thus set the wrong clue. (that's amateurs for ya )

        It clearly says:

" When the war-ravaged Wielki Teatr, Warsaw's opulent opera, ballet and concert hall, was restored in 1965, Mr. Rowicki conducted the opening performance, the opera ''The Haunted House'' by the Polish composer Stanislaw Moniuszko."

"Mr Rowicki" was, of course, Witold Rowicki

        "

Back from a splendid night out... so good to see Am51 really getting into the swing although sorry to have been away and unable to take a crack at his first question... But it seems to me that having got 50 % of the elements to Y plus the overall answer Y, Am51 gets the next one too

Which would be Z or A, at Am51's election...

                  Huzzah!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                    Janacek
                    Elgar
                    Foulds

brilliant work, sorry I wasn't around.

for the "gang", think early 1980's British politics. The book was turned into a 1979 BBC TV series. the word related is important.
(not a very good final element to the question, now I come to think about it. sorry ...........)

I guess that's a 1989 BBC TV series? It would have to be quite a prescient book if it was turned into a TV series in 1979 and was about early 1980s politics....

oh dear, my clues are getting worse!!

The book is Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain (Shirley (SDP "Gang of 4" - March 1981) Williams's mother - hence 'related'), turned into TV series 1979.

No no, I'm just being too literal I think! And ignorant... I had no idea Vera Brittain was dear old Shirl's mum... in fact I realise I have no idea who Vera Brittain was or what Testament of Youth was about as I never saw the series or read the book

So please don't attach the slightest weight to my comment!

I thought it was a damn good question, esp as it is the dreaded Y which others have fought shy of and hastened on to A ...!

Hope Amateur51 shakes a leg in sunny Willesden before too long, and works out a Z or an A to tease and beguile....

Not at all, I got the answer from your original clue. Would it be helpful to Am51 if I post the last Z and A we had before rubbers pops up with an updated list?
