Not a very Useful letter is it?

The only V I can link to Catherine is Voltaire.

You're taking me back to the Wigmore Hall one Sunday afternoon and a recital by a visiting Russian counter-tenor. Now... what was on his programme!

The answer is probably Vassily or Vassilly

V.Petrenko and his infamous comments re female conductors
Vassily Pashkevich - his Opera Fevey has a libretto by Catherine the Great ( and her hand may have been guided by M.Voltaire)
                    ... then there's the unfinished ...

                    HELP!

How about the series of paintings of the Russian 1812 heroes that were created by a team but some were left incomplete - or merely a frame with a name- They are in the Winter Palace and one of the "incompletists" was:

                        Vasily (Wilhelm) Golike

This thread is educational - nowhere nearer the answer of this one but in checking out Trumpet concerti I discovered that Hummel's middle name is Nepomuk - I guess not one of those names that has come back into popularity.
